The interior design program provides professional training through instructors who have enjoyed their own successful interior design careers. You'll learn the best about every aspect of the interior design industry, from traditional drafting and 3D modeling software to lighting and construction methods.

You will also have the opportunity to make valuable connections and learn in advance for many workplaces. * The future path to the Interior Design Certification Qualification (NCIDQ) often undergoes changes. The Center for Arts and Technology is closely following the development of the professional interior design industry and will respond appropriately as the changes progress. All students should seek updated information as it is made available through the National Association (IDC) and each individual provincial association. Find out more about the current status for NCIDQ exam eligibility requirements. Currently, the Center for Arts and Technology graduates qualify to write the NCIDQ exam on the Center for Arts and Technology required postgraduate work experience. Please follow up with a program advisor to help guide you through this process.

Course flow


In the first trimester, students explore foundational concepts in project theory and technical knowledge, beginning to apply this knowledge through project-based work. Students will learn how to use theories and concepts to create robust solutions in the internal environment. This quarter provides an understanding of the global perspective on human achievements in architecture, interior design, and decorative art and their relevance to modern life. Fundamental technical skills will be introduced in drafting and digital programs and by the end of the quarter, students will be able to draw and apply their new knowledge and skills to projects in the coming quarters.

Quarter 3 takes a look at the human, environmental, and "universal / barrier-free" aspects of interior design and space planning. Students will be challenged with solving 3D spatial problems and exploring the connection between internal and external spaces. Courses explore environmental and sustainable factors that influence the selection and design of materials and components and discover new innovations through experimentation, independent and group research, site visits, and guest lectures. Students begin to develop a more personal and visually precise style of visually presenting their projects while exploring construction systems, components and methods used in wood frames and residential construction.

The programming process is integral to the practice of interior design and the fourth quarter familiarizes students with planning concepts, furniture and finish specifications associated with business concepts, with a focus on hospitality concepts. Students will create computer-generated 3D models and explore rendering techniques for conceptual design and presentation drawings. Courses develop floor, wall, and ceiling systems, as well as understanding how to construct and explore interior components, to accurately draw and design details. Students will develop advanced lighting diagrams for commercial spaces that include descriptions and specifications that will result in creative and functional solutions. This quarter emphasizes the application of concepts through the use of technical criteria, specifications, layout and building system coordination.

In the fifth quarter, students develop tools and techniques to research and apply building code rules and universal design rules in an internal environment. Students will also learn about current sustainable practices and rating systems such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Passive Homes and Good Buildings and how to assess and implement strategies in design projects. Building systems for specific commercial spaces as well Include enabling students to communicate more effectively with other design professionals; architects, ME Generators, contractors, and building officials who are all partners in an integrated design process. Systems including HVAC and plumbing, energy management, data voice communication systems, safety, and acoustics, including construction systems, sustainable construction strategies, power distribution systems, mechanical systems. Students will be studied in various CAD software programs currently used in the industry. Award skills extend to the complete set of working images. Will put additional emphasis on retail and application of concepts in health care design.

In the sixth quarter, students will focus on improving and developing your conceptual skills, refining planned design concepts, preparing final drawings, and improving visual presentation skills. The courses explore various theories, approaches and furniture applications applied in today's small, medium and large corporate office design. Students will examine business and business practices relevant to interior design, focusing on contracts, bidding, designer responsibilities, and professional ethics, as well as professional fees, billing, and insurance. In this quarter, students begin compiling and preparing an introductory portfolio with the knowledge and tools needed to complete a high-quality academic and professional portfolio in multiple formats. Under the mentorship of the Practicum Sponsor, students will have experience in two workplaces in interior design and related industries that are relevant to their level of interests and competence.

In the seventh quarter, students will expand their knowledge, practical use and application of building codes and universal design rules to demonstrate their understanding of the interior designer's responsibility to design with health, safety, and public welfare. Students will prepare a plan review and code analysis for their final graduate project. Students will conduct exploratory research using evidence-based design techniques to produce a report, which will form the basis of your final graduate project, while they explore additional 3D software to advance their 3D computer-aided design skills to create and present internal spaces from. Courses include what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur in today's market and allow students to build their business plan and company identity. The seventh trimester includes a second practicum work environment within firms, businesses, and services providers within the interior design profession to advance student understanding of the profession.

A significant portion of the final quarter will implement the research findings from quarter 7 into a design solution for the final undergraduate project that combines with areas of interest that students would like to pursue in interior design. Student projects will address a real and tangible need within the community and present the ultimate solution for the student community, the design industry, and faculty members.

Students will produce and coordinate a complete set of drawings, demonstrating their understanding of the assembly of individual parts of a project into a final coincident drawing package. During this quarter, students also finalize their interior design portfolio, website, and social media, which will help potential employers present their abilities after graduation.
